Nurse Education, Recruitment and Rurality

Research interests around nurse education, recruitment and rurality were triggered by my relocation to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands in 2011.

Currently, I am evaluating the impact of an innovative pilot Pre-Nursing Scholarship programme developed by the University of Stirling in partnership with NHS Highland, NHS Western Isles, Highland Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.  The Pre-Nursing Scholarship is designed for pupils across the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles in their penultimate or final year of secondary education, and comprises: a Residential Week; a Placement Week during which pupils shadow final year student nurses; and completion of a SQA Skills for Work qualification.  With the pilot now in its second and final year, findings from the evaluation will be published in late 2014.
