Volunteering, Activism and the Third Sector

Research interests around volunteering, activism and the third sector stem from my doctoral research project, Negotiating Youth Work, that explored the geographies of youth work, and specifically The Boys’ Brigade.  More recently, I was the researcher on the ESRC-funded Placing Voluntary Activism study that examined and compared understandings of activism in Manchester, UK and Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand in the context of neoliberalism and the rise of inter-sectoral partnerships.

Currently, I am leading the Best Foot Forward (BFF) study, commissioned by Breast Cancer Care.  BFF is an evaluation of the effects of a peer-led walking group intervention delivered in the North of England for women with breast cancer on volunteer Walk Leaders.
